New BT internet service means super-fast broadband available

Areas notoriously bad for broadband connections in the Sevenoaksdistrict will have an improved service by June.

BT Openreach is installing 11 new broadband cabinets in the areato help improve the connections.

Sevenoaks will be one of the first towns in the country tobenefit from the super-fast fibre optic broadband service, called BTInfinity.

A BT spokesman said: "This is very good news for Sevenoaks. "Theservice will boost the competitiveness of local firms and offer awhole new range of flexible working, entertainment and learningopportunities for local residents.

"We anticipate that more than 12,000 homes and businesses in theSevenoaks area will be able to benefit from it."

BT Openreach will be installing the new cables, but it is up tointernet service providers (ISPs) to decide how much it will cost to subscribe to the service.

Meanwhile, residents in Shoreham have received news that theywill have a new, faster broadband supply by August.

Phil Hobson, 57, has been a major part of the driving forcebehind bringing better broadband to his parish and the surroundingvillages.

He said: "Where Shoreham is situated, and the Sevenoaks area as awhole, we are right in the middle of four different phone andbroadband exchanges, so we get a fairly poor signal from all ofthem.

"For example, my house picks up a signal from one of theexchanges, yet the house three doors down gets nothing at all.

"It is good news for the villages because the internet isbecoming more and more important in our everyday lives."
